1. Grounding is non-negotiable
The 2025 default — 'ask GPT-4 about your notes' with bolted-on RAG — produced confident, fluent, untraceable answers. By 2026, users learned to spot the pattern in under thirty seconds and uninstalled accordingly.
Modern AI notes apps cite. Every claim links back to the source note, the source paragraph, or it doesn't get made. An answer with no citations is a bug, not a feature. 2. The graph beats the embedding

The interesting frontier is delegation: 'pull every action item from this week's meeting notes into my tasks board,' 'draft a summary memo from these five research notes and cite them,' 'remind me what I decided about pricing the last three times it came up.'
The agent is a co-worker with read access to your second brain, not a chatbot you copy-paste into. Apps that still ship a chat box and call it AI are about to look like apps that shipped a hamburger menu in 2014 — technically functional, obviously dated.
What this means for your stack
If your current notes tool's AI feature still feels like a demo, that's because it is one. The 2026 bar is grounded, graph-aware, and genuinely agentic.
